Householders throughout Ireland are urged to check their septic tanks or biocycle units to confirm if they need cleaning/desludging or, in the case of more modern systems, servicing or repair.
Damien McBreen, the managing director (MD) of McBreen Environmental, recommends that regular inspection and servicing will prevent problems. “Ideally, you should have your domestic waste water treatment system (DWWTS) checked every 18 months to 2 years, and emptied if required. This will avoid the occurrence of more serious problems, which can be costly to rectify. It will also ensure you are following current environmental regulations”.
In June 2012, a new registration and inspection regime was introduced for domestic waste water treatment systems, such as septic tanks. The new regime aims to protect ground and surface water quality from the risks posed by systems that are not working properly. It was introduced under the Water Services (Amendment) Act 2012.

As well as regular cleaning, it is also recommended that home owners follow these rules for proper septic tank maintenance:
- Do not pour harsh products down the drain, including: oils, grease, chemicals, paint and medications.
- Don’t plant trees on septic tanks. Tree roots can damage the system.
