How the Procedure Works

  1. Survey & Defect Identification
    Use CCTV or visual inspection to locate defective lateral connections or pipe joints. Measure pipe sizes, assess access.

  2. Access & Preparation
    Clean the connection area; remove debris, roots; if required, robotic cutting to reopen closed laterals. Ensure the insertion point is accessible.

  3. Insert Top Hat Collar / Patch
    Position the resin-impregnated Top Hat using a packer, robotic tool or manual insertion, depending on the site. Seal around the main pipe wall; insert into the lateral connection.

  4. Curing
    Allow resin to cure (ambient temperature or controlled conditions). Monitor curing (ambient temp, resin mix, etc.).

  5. Testing / Verification
    Post-installation u,se CCTV or pressure/air/water testing to verify sealing, ensure no leaks or infiltration.

  6. Completion & Handover
    Provide report: photos/CCTV, specification of repaired lateral, guarantee or warranty term, maintenance advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size lateral connections can be repaired with Top Hat?

Usually works for laterals from approx 100-300mm, depending on main pipe size; must check orientation and material.

Is excavation required?

No, this is a trenchless solution. Top Hat allows you to repair from the main sewer without digging up the lateral.

How long does the resin last / what is the guarantee?

With proper installation, Top Hat systems are designed for long service lives (often 50+ years in lab conditions), backed by manufacturer warranties and testing.

Does the repaired lateral need to be reopened?

Yes. After curing, the lateral connection is reopened (if previously blocked), in accordance with the specification (CCTV verification, etc.). IW-TEC-800-05 requires lateral connections to be reopened after lining. 

Are Top Hats chemical-resistant/able to handle harsh environments?

Yes. The resin systems used are designed to resist wide pH ranges, chemical exposure, and temperature extremes.
