Why Bund Testing Matters
Regulatory requirement: The EPA requires all new bunds to be tested before use, and most bunds must be retested every 3 years.
Licence compliance: Mandatory under IPPC, Waste, and Local Authority permits.
Environmental protection: Prevents pollution and costly clean-ups.
Business protection: Reduces risk of downtime, liability, and fines.

How Often Should Bunds Be Tested?

In-service bunds: typically every 3 years
After events: structural damage, modifications, or chemical exposure

Frequently Asked Questions
How often must bunds be tested in Ireland?
Most bunds must be integrity tested every 3 years, with new bunds tested before first use. Frequency may vary by licence or risk level.
What is the difference between hydrostatic and visual bund testing?
Hydrostatic: fill the bund with water and check for leaks, most reliable.
Visual: engineer inspection of structural condition, acceptable in some cases where hydrostatic is impractical.
Who requires bund testing?
Commercial and industrial sites handling oils, chemicals, wastewater, or hazardous liquids, including pharmaceutical, food & beverage, manufacturing, and utility sectors.
What happens if my bund fails?
You’ll receive a remedial action report with repair recommendations. Once repairs are completed, the bund can be retested and certified.
How long does bund testing take?
A visual inspection may take only a few hours. Hydrostatic tests usually require 6–24 hours, with larger bunds taking longer.
