No-Dig Cable Duct Rehabilitation at Energy Plant

10 February 2026

McBreen Environmental was contracted to restore three 40-metre, 225mm diameter cable ducts on a major energy infrastructure project.

The ducts had become unserviceable for housing new high-voltage cables, and traditional excavation was not feasible due to restricted access beneath the plant.

Challenges

  • Concrete intrusion from ageing piling

  • Crushed sections within the ducts

  • Open joints creating potential voids

  • Excavation was not possible due to plant layout and operational constraints

Outcome:

The successful rehabilitation of the cable ducts allowed the energy plant to proceed with the installation of new high-voltage cables without the need for disruptive excavation works. By using trenchless rehabilitation techniques, the project avoided major civil works within a highly constrained operational environment.

The restored ducts now provide a structurally sound and fully serviceable pathway for critical electrical infrastructure, ensuring long-term reliability and performance. The project demonstrates how no-dig rehabilitation solutions can effectively extend the life of underground assets while maintaining operational continuity within complex industrial facilities.
